Abstract
Patients with special health care needs (SHCNs) are more susceptible to dental trauma. Despite increasing number and susceptibility to dental trauma of patients with SHCNs, relatively fewer studies have reported prevalence of dental trauma in patients with SHCNs. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of dental trauma in patients with SHCNs and to statistically analyze various factors of dental trauma. This study involved 77 patients who visited the department of pediatric dentistry, Kyunghee university dental hospital with a chief complaint of dental trauma from 1997 to 2016. Collected data were statistically analyzed using fisher¡¯s exact test. Dental trauma occurred most frequently to the patients with intellectual disability. ¡®Fall down¡¯ was a leading cause of trauma. The type of disability did not have a significant influence on cause of trauma. And there was no significant difference in type of injuries among the patients with different types of disability. And there was no significant association between residential type and cause of trauma. Besides, there was no significant difference in elapsed time to dental clinics between 2 residential types. Medical history of seizure did not show significant association with cause of trauma. And there was no dominant type of injury in patients with seizures. However, compared to non-disabled patients, elapsed time to dental clinic was longer. Based on the findings of this study, education program regarding prevention and management of dental trauma should be made for care givers of patients with SHCNs to improve dental health status of patients with SHCNs.
